Locums Often Ask Me, "Do I Need Income Protection?"
Dec 03, 2024As a part of my commitment to educating locums, the best place to start is to begin with a close look at your own personal risks and needs. And that self-education should always begin with an assessment of reality. Although these aren't even all the reasons for having income protection, they do capture the most common motivations or reasons for purchasing it.
- I'm a primary breadwinner for my family. I have young children and my family is absolutely dependent on my income. If I were to unable to earn income, they'd be in big trouble.
- I've got debt. I have a mortgage, car loan, credit card, student loan or other significant debt that I couldn't burden my family and friends with if I were unable to earn income. It would break them
- I don't want to burden my family with the need to take care of me, or I don't have any close family whom I could rely on to take care of me if I weren't able to earn income for myself.
- I don't have a rainy day fund set aside to cover not only regular expenses but also potential additional expenses (medical expenses, special care) if I had to go even six months without income.
- I don't have assets that I couldn't burden rely on to support me, and my family's standard of living if I were unable to work for an extended period of time.
