Indirect Consequences of Being Unable To Work
Dec 03, 2024Beyond financial effects of not being able to work, there are also possible long-term social and psychological effects that are worth considering.
Returning to work: While returning to work is always a goal, there's no guarantee that you can continue work as a locum, as such your income may not be the same. You may also have to return to work on a part time basis only, which can cause continued reduced income. And depending on the disability, the medical costs you incur may be quite high, even if you have medical insurance.
Impact on family: disability often requires family members, particularly spouses to provide special care and assistance. This can be challenging if the resources aren't available to get help for the caregiver who themselves are probably working outside the home.
Increased risk of divorce: financial stress is a leading cause of divorce. This is further compounded by the emotional and mental stress that often accompanies a disability. It's risky to count on your spouse's income to support you if you become unable to work.
